Ryan Braun Belting the Baseball, Biding Time ‘Til Brewerdom?

Forgive the title.

Ryan Braun went 2-for-3 today with a HR and two walks. He’s now hitting .343/.425/.886 with 5HR in 40PAs. His BB:K isRyan Braun 5:2, and nine of his twelve hits have gone for extra bases.

The Brewers think Braun’s bat is ready for the bigs. He tore up spring training (including ST numbers, he now has 10HRs in 69ABs this year), and everything about him–his power, plate discipline, and lack of K’s (7 in69ABs)–says he’s a major league hitter. The big question this preseason was Braun’s defense, and while that’s still the case, it’s going to be hard to keep him down if he keeps hitting this way.

With the possibility Corey Koskie’s career is over, Craig Counsell is the Brewers’ regular 3B right now. He’s only spent eight games at the hot corner over the last three years. Can his defense really be that much better? The team may decide soon that his .700 OPS isn’t worth whatever marginal upgrade he may give the team on the field. In fact, I’d bet on it.

I predict we’ll see Braun in a Brewers’ uni sometime in early May. Maybe sooner. As I pointed out previously, he’s not in Yahoo’s database, so he’ll be a HUGE waiver catch in any Yahoo league without a minor league system. If there’s any advantage you can give yourself with this information, you better get on it while you have the chance.
