- Angel Guzman is scheduled to start the May 1st game against the Pirates. A good outing will likely earn him a spot in the rotation even when Wade Miller comes back off the DL. If that happens, Guzman will immediately become one of the better strikeout pitchers in the bigs, as he averaged over a K per inning last year in AAA and with Chicago. Guzman’s problems in the majors last year were caused by horrible HR and BB rates, but he’s put up a career 0.45HR/9 and 2.32BB/9 in nearly 500 minor league innings. Jump on it.
- Henry Owens was pulled out of a 9th-inning save situation last night after giving up 3H and 2ER in two-thirds of an inning. Reynel Pinto finished the game, but that was likely only because Taylor Tankersley pitched a perfect 8th. Owens has now allowed 3HR in 12.1 innings, to go along with a 5:4 BB:K ratio. Do those look like closer numbers to you?
- After I plugged him as a cheap flyer in deep leagues, Chris Sampson got blasted in his start last night against the Phillies, giving up 14H and 7ER in only 4IP. As a low-K/high-GB control pitcher, hits are always going to be his worst enemy. His control was still great, with 1BB and 4K, but he’s definitely more of a spot-starter right now.
- Did you jump on James Shields when I told you to? If you didnt, it’s too late.
- Philip Hughes, my unquestioned waiver-bait champ, is scheduled to start against the Blue Jays on Thursday. You’ve seen this fifty times already this morning, but I’m just pumped he’s going to be available in Yahoo leagues so soon.
- After throwing a perfect inning tonight with 1K, Mike Wuertz has now put up 13 scoreless innings with 5H and a 4:13 BB:K ratio. Lou Piniella likes to have an effective reliever he can ride in the ‘pen, and so far he’s been giving plenty of innings to Wuertz. Dempster doesn’t look like he’s giving the closing job up anytime soon, but Wuertz certainly deserves to move up a few places on my middle relievers list.

I’ll be watching Guzman’s start very closely for two reasons, one I am a cubs fan and two I have him as a deep sleeper in mixed leagues. With his curve and ability to strike guys out it could make for some great numbers. I think he was a little overwhelmed with being up in the bigs last year, much like Rich Hill. I’m rooting for the guy!!
Shields was drafted in my 12 team mixed league and every round towards the end I thought I could wait another round to get him and finally got burned!
